THE GARDEN MONSTER
“My formative years were heavily influenced by stories I read and the fantastical tales that I envisioned. Growing up, this affinity towards otherworldly concepts and objects has remained part of who I am as a designer.”
My formative years were heavily influenced by stories I read and the fantastical tales that I envisioned. Growing up, this affinity towards otherworldly concepts and objects has remained part of who I am. My brand is built on the concept of escapism and being transported into a strange world that I create through every collection. To take it a step further and truly experience my vision in an alluring and hypnotic manner, I believe in the power of the senses. In doing so, I want to focus on the four senses; Sight, touch, sound, and smell for the wearer of my garments to truly understand and experience the dark, mysterious, and entrancing world I’ve built around each collection.
To experiment with this idea, I have based my research for this project on the fundamentals of Bio-fabrication to imbed smell into fabrics and Smart Textiles to produce a sound. The other two senses of sight and touch will be created through texture and design development to give a 4-dimensional experience for the wearer.
This collection is based on a nightmare I had as a child based on the park near my childhood home. The park was covered in flowers and bushy trees that canopied over out house. In my sleep, I saw the plants coming to life as they moved and grabbed me only to swallow me whole. Ever since then, I was terrified of the park since all I could recall was the monstrous trees and plants that were not calming, but rather distressing to me. This collection titled ‘The Garden Monster’ will comprise of large, beastly silhouettes and textures alongside microencapsulated silk fabric and sound-conductive cotton fabrics to truly immerse the wearer into the naïve dream I once had.
I will also place emphasis on my values of using of natural fabrics and consider the garment’s impact in the product life cycle. I will consider potential applications of my sensory garments/ techniques while also finding ways to make them more sustainable (Inspired by Phool’s used of old temple flowers).
Concept & Research Development
“I believe in the power of the senses. In doing so, I want to focus on the four senses; Sight, touch, sound, and smell for the wearer of my garments to truly understand and experience the dark, mysterious, and entrancing world I’ve built around each collection.”

Experimentation
“To create a memory through a scent, I investigated the microencapsulation of scent within fabrics.”

Design Development
“By incorporating all five senses into garment design, designers can create a unique and memorable experience for the wearer, making the garment more than just an item of clothing, but rather an interactive and engaging piece of wearable art.”
